Widad Hassan brings six years of administrative and outreach experience working with the Muslim community in New York to her role as part- time Executive Assistant for the Muslim Community Network. Prior to working at MCN, Ms. Hassan worked as Outreach Director for the Muslim American Society Brooklyn & Staten Island sub chapter.
In 2011 she interned as the outreach coordinator at the Council on American Islamic Relations. At CAIR she worked alongside mosques and Islamic Centers to help provide Know Your Rights workshops. Shortly after, she served as a research assistant at Human Rights Watch for the Middle East North Africa Division. At HRW she provided the lead researcher with up-to-date reports and news summaries on Yemen’s protests during the Arab Spring for published report “No Safe Places; Yemen’s Crackdown on Protests in Taiz” (February 2012).
Ms. Hassan has also worked in local government, serving as Legislative Aide to Council member Gale A. Brewer’s office in 2013. She earned her Bachelors degree in Political Science from Baruch College in 2014 and is currently working on pursuing a Masters Degree in Human Rights Studies with a focus on women’s issues alongside her work with MCN.
