Social Justice

Muslim Consultative Network and its members work to denounce terrorism wherever it may be and discourage radicalization and self-marginalization as responses to injustice. We also deplore unilateral and disproportionate uses of force.

MCN members noted with great alarm with attempt to bring down flight 253 on December 24, 2009 as well as other recent plots. While some of us remain skeptical about specific cases, and most of us sincerely condemn restrictions of rights in the name of security, it is irresponsible to deny or automatically blame "others" for terror plots. These and other plots are profoundly unislamic and can never help us build a world of peace and justice.

MCN urges authorities to clearly differentiate between actual plots and mere radical posturing or national freedom struggles. That said, killing civilians is never acceptable. As Muslims, we endorse the recent Fatwa Against Terrorism  (see attached PDF) as well as the ISNA statement on Adam Gadahn in March 2010. War often targets civilians, with tragic consequences around the world. In 2008, MCN issued a statement about the conflict between Russia and Georgia. In 2009 we expressed serious concern about treatment of Muslim minorities in China: Russian version or Bilingual English & Russian version or Chinese version.

  • Like most Muslims, MCN also strongly deplored Israel’s disproportionate response to Hamas provocations in January 200 9— the cycle of violence in the region can only make coexistence harder to envision. MCN supports efforts to promote a humanitarian response. See our statement

At the same time, acknowledging that the “Muslim world” faces many growing pains, with many causes, many American Muslims believe that our religion calls us to criticize what is wrong especially in our own backyard—both a Muslim and American back yard.

Regarding the late 2008 Mumbai attacks: understood correctly, Islam teaches that the use of terrorism is unacceptable for any purpose. Regardless of background or affiliation, those truly responsible for brutal and immoral attacks should be brought to justice through swift application of the law.
